Nelson Coffee
A Roaster We Trust
At the other end of the country, we have Nelson Coffee Roasters, based in Eastbourne, near Brighton. Nelson Coffee's Eastbourne café first opened its doors in 2014. What started as an independent specialty coffee shop quickly became one of Eastbourne's best, award-winning cafes, and they have since opened a roastery that also serves excellent brunch.
The business was born out of a honeymoon trip taken by the founders in 2009, where they visited a specialty coffee shop in a quaint and charming town called Nelson, in British Columbia. Five years later they opened their café, and are now proudly serving excellent coffee across the south coast. That kind of story-driven, personal connection to coffee is exactly what we look for in the independent UK roasters we feature in our specialty coffee subscription boxes.
Rancho Grande Farm
Established in 1933, Rancho Grande Farm, spanning 5 hectares, upholds a legacy of quality coffee production, led by Jose Carlos Reis and his son Flávio (Fafa) Reis. The farm, committed to environmental responsibility, also engages in dairy and meat farming, providing subsidised housing for its workers. The farm takes an experimental approach, incorporating pre-anaerobic fermentation and static drying boxes, which defy traditional expectations, resulting in exceptional cup quality. This Acaia lot undergoes wet milling, followed by 24 hours of cold air and 16 days of warm air in static boxes. After 35 days of stabilisation, the coffee is milled, presenting a uniquely fruity profile that challenges typical Brazilian natural coffee flavours.
We love this experimentally processed coffee – give it a try for a deliciously smooth, sweet taste.
This coffee can be enjoyed as a bold espresso-based drink or as a filter. As it's a natural coffee, it's worth trying black and experimenting with it.
Coffees like this are exactly why RISE Coffee Box exists. Every month, we blind taste 25-30 coffees from independent specialty coffee roasters across the UK – from south coast favourites like Nelson Coffee Roasters to standout names we've discovered along the way – and choose only the very best to feature in our coffee subscription boxes. If you love discovering new specialty coffee, sustainably sourced and roasted by people who genuinely care about where it comes from, a RISE coffee subscription is the easiest way to explore it all from home.
