Day 7: Ethiopia Sidamo – Advent Calendar Reveal
Origin: Ethiopia
Location: Sidamo, Oromia
Altitude: 1,500-2,000 masl
Tasting notes: Stonefruit, Lemongrass and Black tea
Why Alice and Ben love it: Today’s coffee comes from the lush highlands of Sidamo, southern Ethiopia, one of the most celebrated coffee regions in the world. Grown at a whopping 1,900 meters above sea level, this single-origin Arabica, of the Bourbon varietal, is naturally processed and sun-dried to highlight its vibrant character.
You might have seen coffee from this region in supermarkets - and farmers here grow and export all types of coffee, from cheaper "commodity" coffee used by large coffee conglomerates, to the high end specialty beans that we roast.
Compared to the bold coffees featured earlier in the calendar, this one brings a lighter, more playful side. Natural processing gives it a distinctive, sometimes “boozy” fruit flavour - an acquired taste for some, but a firm favourite for us. Read more about natural coffee here
Sidamo's volcanic soil, shade-grown crops, and traditional organic farming create the perfect storm for extraordinary coffee. Farmers here often intercrop with papaya, banana, tea, and avocado, enriching both soil and flavour.
What makes this cup special is more than taste - it's heritage. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, and in Sidamo, that legacy thrives. This coffee captures the spirit of the region: nuanced, complex, and deeply rooted in tradition.
