Why Alice and Ben love it: This coffee embodies what we love - incredible flavour, strong community values, and care for the planet. The Nkora Washing Station is located in the Rutsiro district of Western Rwanda, about 150km from the capital, Kigali. Sitting on the banks of Lake Kivu near the stunning Gishwati-Mukura National Park, it works with over 4,000 local farmers growing coffee high in the mountains at 1,600–1,800 metres above sea level.
Opened in 1957, Nkora is the oldest and largest coffee washing station in Rwanda, producing over 500 tonnes of coffee each year! Nkora is deeply involved in its community and so far it’s helped build five classrooms and a free on-site primary school for over 60 local children each year. The team also supports farmers in protecting the environment by planting shade trees and preventing soil erosion.
