But before we get into brewing tips, let us introduce ourselves.
We're Alice & Ben - the Founders of RISE coffee box
We're a coffee-loving couple who love drinking café-quality coffee at home, and are proud to have built the UK's biggest coffee club.
The idea for RISE began during lockdown. Like many people, we found ourselves drinking a lot more coffee at home. But we quickly realised something; while there were incredible independent coffee roasters across the UK, discovering them wasn’t always easy.
Supermarket coffee often felt stale and uninspiring, while online choices could be overwhelming. There were too many origins, roast types and flavour profiles to choose from! So we decided to create something simple:
A coffee subscription that delivers the UK’s most exciting specialty coffees straight to your door.
As a B Corp company, every coffee we include in RISE is carefully taste-tested and sourced from independent roasters who share our commitment to quality, sustainability, and ethical sourcing.
Today, RISE has grown into a thriving community of coffee lovers across the UK and we’re thrilled you’ve joined us on this amazing journey.

Why Specialty Coffee Matters
If you’re new to specialty coffee, you might be wondering what makes it different from regular coffee. The difference lies in quality, freshness, and responsible sourcing from farm to cup. You have a lovely new machine with the best functionality and it deserves the best coffee!
Exceptional Quality
Specialty coffee is made from the highest-quality Arabica beans, grown in ideal climates and harvested and picked at the right time to ensure full flavour. Each coffee has its own unique flavour profile shaped by its origin, altitude, and processing method.
Ethical & Sustainable Sourcing
Specialty coffee producers prioritise fair wages, long-term relationships, and sustainable farming practices. Supporting specialty coffee means supporting the farmers and communities who grow it. We also have our 1% Friendly Coffee Fund - which gives back 1% of all revenue to coffee farming communities we've met in person in Western Uganda.
Expert Roasting
Unlike mass-produced coffee, specialty beans are roasted in small batches to highlight their natural characteristics and create balanced flavour. Eacg flavour profile is carefully curated by our expert roasters.
Community & Discovery
Specialty coffee is also about discovery. Each month at RISE we showcase different independent roasters and origins so you can explore new flavours and brewing styles. Our mission is to take you on a journey of coffee discovery and help you brew better at home.
Coffee That Gives Back
One thing that makes RISE unique is our commitment to giving back.
Through our Friendly Coffee Fund™, we donate 1% of every sale directly to coffee-growing communities.
Our first project is based in Western Uganda, where the fund helps support:
-
Full-time education for over 100 children
-
School lunches and transport
-
Sports days and education sessions
-
Essential school equipment
We believe great coffee should create positive change for the people who grow it.
Getting the Best from Your Ninja Coffee Machine
Your Ninja Luxe Café Pro is designed to make barista-style coffee simple but a few small tweaks can make a big difference to the flavour in your cup.
Here are a few handy tips to help you get the most out of your machine.

1. Always Use Freshly Roasted Coffee
Freshness is one of the biggest factors in great coffee.
When buying beans, always look for a roast date, not just a “best before” date. You want this date to be as close as possible to the day you buy it - for maximum freshness. Coffee does need to 'de-gas" and so we recommend drinking it 7 -10 days after its roast date for maximum flavour.
Coffee typically tastes its best within three months of roasting, which is why RISE ships freshly roasted beans directly from independent roasters. Coffee roasted fresh as that lovely aroma when you open the bag. Supermarket coffee has often sat on shelves for months and has a flat aroma and taste.
Fresh coffee helps create:
-
Better crema on your espresso (Crema is the thin, golden-brown foam that sits on top of an espresso shot)
-
Richer aroma
-
Fuller flavour
2. Use the Right Grind Size
Grind size controls how quickly water extracts flavour from the coffee.
If the grind is too coarse, the water flows through too quickly and the coffee tastes weak or sour. If it’s too fine, extraction slows down and the coffee can taste bitter.
Luckily, the Ninja Luxe Café Pro includes Barista Assist technology, which helps automatically calibrate the grind settings for your beans.
Simply brew a couple of test shots and the machine will help dial things in. We have this machine and it works perfectly!
3. Perfect Your Espresso Crema
Crema is the golden, velvety layer that sits on top of an espresso shot. It is often the best way to see how well the coffee shot has oured and how fresh the coffee is.
To achieve great crema you need:
-
Fresh coffee beans
-
The correct grind size
-
Proper dose and tamp (see below)
-
Correct water temperature and pressure
When these elements align, your espresso will have rich texture, sweetness, and balance.

4. Tamp Evenly
When preparing espresso, tamping compresses the coffee grounds into a puck.
Aim for a flat, even tamp, applying firm but gentle pressure.
Avoid pressing too hard — you want the water to flow through evenly for consistent extraction.

5. Use Filtered Water
Water makes up over 98% of your coffee, so quality matters.
Using filtered water helps:
-
Improve flavour clarity
-
Reduce bitterness
-
Prevent mineral build-up in your machine
Filtered water often results in a sweeter and more balanced cup.
