Day 2: DRC – Advent Calendar Reveal
Origin: Democratic Republic of the Congo
Location: Lake Kivu
Altitude: 1,600-2,000 meters above sea level
Tasting notes: Mixed berries and Chocolate
Why Alice and Ben love it:
The Lake Kivu region has produced coffee for generations, and in recent years the coffee quality has greatly improved. With its equatorial climate, rich ecosystems, and lush mountains providing natural shade, the area is ideal for growing exceptional beans. This coffee comes from the Muungano Cooperative, nestled on the western shore of Lake Kivu. Reaching this coffee farm involves a bumpy, three-hour trek from Goma, past the lively town of Minova, known for yuca plants, fish, and unavoidable “road taxes.”
Founded in 2009, the Muungano Cooperative brings together about 4,400 smallholder farmers, nearly half of them women. Their mission extends beyond coffee, championing gender equity and unity across ethnic groups. Despite the challenges of farming in the DRC, Muungano’s members remain optimistic and dedicated, producing sweet, bright, and complex coffees that reflect their passion and perseverance.
This coffee is full-bodied, bold and intense. At RISE we usually recommend trying your coffee without milk, but this one really shines with milk.
