The coffee scene in the South West of the UK is hotting up! The quality and quantity of new roasters that are emerging is getting us excited here at RiSE coffee box! We are always on the hunt for new and exciting coffee roasters and coffee shops and the South West of the UK has a brilliant coffee culture with some fantastic roasters. Cornwall hosts some of the most well known roasters such as Origin coffee, but there are also plenty of smaller operators doing just a good a job! Have a look at some of the coffee festivals this year to see if any of them are featuring!

They source all their coffees exclusively from change-making womxn producers. Dalia Casancho Rodriguez grows and processes all of her own coffee, the most beautiful coffee, and she still finds time to help drive the other members in the community towards their own coffee goals. Inspirational doesn’t even cover it.

Origin Coffee

Founded in 2004 by Tom Sobey, Origin Coffee is an independently owned speciality coffee roaster that is bound by one central ethos–to source incredible coffee through a sustainable, triple bottom line approach.
They are the first B corp on the list and what inspiring work they are doing to be planet positive.

Crankhouse Coffee

Crankhouse Coffee was launched in 2014 and is based in Exeter in the South West of England. They have a clear focus on quality and service and a continuing exploration of the craft and science of coffee roasting.
The roastery has grown and relocated from its beginnings in a single car garage, then into a converted barn on the edge of Dartmoor national park to its current home in Exeter’s West Quarter.

This Cornish roaster featured in our RiSE coffee box subscription in March 2023, featuring their Steadfast Ugandan and Honduras blend.
The name Olfactory was first inspired by a play with the words “old” and “factory”, based on the building that the roastery was built in. Olfactory is also the sense through which we perceive smells, and it also plays an important role in taste. The team here always rely on our olfactory senses when they are selecting and tasting new coffees.
The team, based in Cornwall, is composed of the most knowledgeable, talented, and kind people in the industry. They believe that the work environment should be filled with enthusiasm and excitement, and coffee of course! You can see that they very much love what we do, and that shows through our passion, care and attention to detail.
Roastworks Coffee Co

Will and Caroline Little founded Roastworks in 2014 but for them, starting a coffee business was a lifetime in the making. Wills parents were at the forefront of the Second Wave in artisan coffee when they started roasting in the late eighties. He was adamant “not to do the coffee thing” and instead became a graphic designer. But, while working in London, he became inspired by the work of roasters like Monmouth and Square Mile and the emerging Third Wave coffee scene and Roastworks was born.

Clifton Coffee roasters

Founded by James Fisher in 2001, Clifton Coffee Company began its life servicing espresso machinery in the independent businesses of Bristol. As the reputation for service grew, so too did the demand for supply of coffee & equipment and so, just a couple of years later, when joined by Ed Buston, Clifton Coffee began wholesaling roasted coffees to the surrounding area, backed up with relatively unknown at the time ‘barista training’ to support its wholesale customers.
The team at Clifton Coffee believe in transparent and ethical sourcing. 90% of their volume is bought directly from origin through their own relationships that hey have built travelling the world, creating and maintaining partnerships and ensuring their buying program delivers across the three pillars of economic, environmental and socially sustainable trade. They also work closely with co-operatives, private exporters, NGO’s and Indigenous Rights Groups to ensure that the coffees they sell are ethical, free from exploitation, and truly traceable. This is remarkable and since our recent trip to Uganda ourselves, brilliant to see a roaster going direct to origin and building these relationships.
